Full course description

If you love reading and perhaps enjoy writing creatively too – blogs, a diary, poems, short stories – then this will be the perfect class for you! ?This class is open to students of all subject disciplines who want to improve their use of English through writing creatively and exploring English literature. Develop your language skills – reading, writing, speaking and listening – in a stimulating, creative context. We will do a short creative writing exercise each class and read and discuss an extract from a well-known novel or short story. Enhance your understanding and appreciation of the English language and culture, expand your vocabulary and develop your ability to express your opinions and feelings in a fun, motivating group of like-minded students.

Learning Objectives

·         To develop your English reading, listening, reading and speaking skills  

·         To expand your vocabulary  

·         To write creatively in English and produce fictional or autobiographical texts 

·         To develop an initial understanding of the craft of writing fiction 

·         To develop or expand an appreciation of reading beyond that required for academic purposes 



The course will include the following: 


·         Brief in-class creative writing exercises  

·         Getting writing and idea generation 

·         A focus on the components of fiction: character, plot, place, etc 

·         Reading extracts from short stories, poems and plays 

·         Discussion. Expressing your opinion and asking for clarification 

·         Listening 

·         Vocabulary-building exercises  

·         Developing accuracy - techniques for editing & proof-reading

·         Developing your style
